In the CBA that was signed in 2016 by the TSC and teachers’ unions, teachers received some enhanced basic salary and allowances. Though enhancement in basic salary favoured mostly administrators, the then Salaries and Remuneration Commission provided some considerable increase in house allowance for the teachers. This article explores some TSC allowances per job group enjoyed by teachers and how the house allowance differs depending on where you are teaching.
All teachers in Kenya employed by the TSC enjoy three allowances;
- House allowance
- Commuter allowance
- Annual leave allowance
Annual leave allowance is paid to all teachers once at the beginning of every year.

Teachers in job groups B5 and C1 receive a leave allowance of Ksh. 4,000, while those in C2 to C5 get 6,000.
The teachers in D1 – D5, mostly administrators, get paid Ksh. 10,000.
In addition, hardship allowance is paid to teachers in designated hardship areas in some parts of the following counties:
- Mandera County
- Marsabit County
- Kwale County
- Garissa County
- Wajir County
- West Pokot County
- Narok County
- Turkana County
- Kilifi County
- Isiolo County
- Lamu County
- Taita Taveta County
- Tana River County
- Samburu County

Another allowance referred to as readers/facilitation/aid allowance is given to blind teachers and teachers confined to wheelchairs by virtue of their disability.
This allowance is payable at a rate of Ksh. 15,000 per month.

TSC Teachers Commuter Allowances
Every teacher employed under the TSC receive transport allowance per month in accordance with their job groups;

TSC Teachers House Allowance by Job Group and Region
Here are the enhanced house allowances for teachers in different regions of Kenya;
Teachers within Nairobi receive higher house allowances due to increased house rents in the city.
However, note that major municipalities strictly refers to those areas within major towns.
Other former municipalities and other areas in Kenya are paid according to the following table;
Most areas in Kenya, especially rural areas fall under other areas when it comes to TSC house allowances. However, other TSC allowances per job group, like commuter allowance and leave allowance do not depend on the region one is teaching.
