The current constitution which was promulgated in 2010 brought about the devolution and decentralization of governance and powers to 47 counties established by the constitution. Districts were replaced by counties headed by a governor. The county government constitutes the county executive and the county assembly. This article presents a list of the 47 counties in Kenya and their current governors and deputies.
The governor is the chief executive of the county while the deputy governor is the deputy chief executive of the county.
According to the 2010 Kenyan constitution, governors can vie for the gubernatorial seats for only two consecutive terms. That is two 5 year terms.
In the August 2022 General Election, 7 female governors were duly declared elected as county bosses. These are Susan Kihika of Nakuru, Fatuma Achani of Kwale, Kawira Mwangaza of Meru, Cecily Mbarire of Embu, Wavinya Ndeti of Machakos, Gladys Wanga if Homa Bay and Anne Waiguru of Kirinyaga.
