Kenyatta University Diploma Courses, Requirements and Fees

Kenyatta University offers over 34 diploma courses across its campuses around the country. Some diploma programmes are full time while some can be accessed through online and distance learning otherwise known as DSVOL (Digital School of Virtual and Open Learning).

Intake for the diploma courses at KU is mostly done in September, but some courses have intakes in January and May, and a few others in December.

1. School of Pure and Applied Sciences Courses

Diploma in Forensic Science

The mode of study is Regular, Full Time and is offered at the Main campus.

Requirements

Mean Grade of at least C (Plain)  in KCSE with C+ (Plus) in Biology and Chemistry, and C (Plain) in Mathematics/Physics OR KCE Division III with a Credit in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics/Physics, or have served in the disciplined forces for a minimum of two (2) years with experience in any Forensic Science discipline.

A Certificate in Forensic Science with a minimum KCSE mean grade C- (Minus) or equivalent will also be considered for admission.

Fees

East Africans Kshs. 72,000, Non-East Africans Kshs. 125,000. Statutory Fees Kshs. 26,000.

2. School of Agriculture and Enterprise Development Courses

a) Diploma in Animal Health and Production Management

Available at Kitui campus and the mode of study is regular-full time.

Course Requirement

Mean Grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or Division III at KCE or one Principal and one Subsidiary at KACE OR Mean grade of C-(Minus) at KCSE with a certificate in the relevant area from a recognized institution.

OR. (i) A minimum of overall mean Grade C in KCSE with at least Grade C in Biology or Biological Sciences, and C- in Chemistry, and C- in Mathematics/Physics/Physical Sciences/Agriculture.

(ii) Minimum Division II in KCE/EACE with at least Credit in Biology or Biological Sciences, and Chemistry and Mathematics/Physical Sciences/Agriculture.

(iii) A minimum of C- (minus) in KCSE and at Certificate with Credit in Animal Health/Agriculture /Range Management/Dairy Technology or equivalent with least a Credit Pass Diploma in Animal Health/ Agriculture/ Medical Laboratory Technology /Animal production from an institution recognized by the University Senate.

(iv) At least Principal in Biology and one Subsidiary in Chemistry pass at KACE level (A Level).

(v) A Diploma in a Biomedical discipline from an institution recognized by the University Senate.

(vi) Any other qualifications equivalent to the above from an institution recognized by the University Senate.

b) Diploma in Animal Health and Production Management

Available at Kitui campus on Regular-Full Time, Digital mode.

Minimum Course Requirements

Mean Grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or Division III at KCE or one Principal and one Subsidiary at KACE OR Mean grade of C-(Minus) at KCSE with a certificate in the relevant area from a recognized institution.

An applicant will qualify for admission into the Diploma in Animal Health and Production Programme if they have met any of the requirements listed below:

(i) A minimum of overall mean Grade C in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with at least Grade C in Biology or Biological Sciences, and C- in Chemistry, and C- in Mathematics/Physics/Physical Sciences/Agriculture.

(ii) Minimum Division II in KCE/EACE with at least Credit in Biology or Biological Sciences, and Chemistry and Mathematics/Physical Sciences/Agriculture.

(iii) A minimum of C- (minus) in KCSE and at Certificate with Credit in Animal Health/Agriculture /Range Management/Dairy Technology or equivalent with least a Credit Pass Diploma in Animal Health/ Agriculture/ Medical Laboratory Technology /Animal production from an institution recognized by the University Senate.

3. School of Hospitality, Tourism & Leisure Studies Courses

a) Diploma in Hospitality Management

Mode: Regular-Full Time & Blended, DSVOL.

The course is available at Main, Mombasa DSVOL-Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Garissa, Kisumu, and Embu campuses.

Requirements

C (Plain) at KCSE or equivalent and grade C-(minus) in two (2) subjects chosen from the following categories:- Alternative A: or Biology/Home Science/Chemistry OR. Alternative B: Biological Sciences/Physical Sciences/Mathematics OR. English/Kiswahili OR. English/Kiswahili.

Mode of study: Regular-Full Time, Blended and Open Learning.

Course Minimum Requirements

A minimum mean grade of C in KCSE examinations.

Candidates must also have done any two the following subjects at KCSE and passed with a minimum grade of C in each: Biology/Biological Sciences OR. Geography/History OR. Business Education/Computers OR. English/Foreign Language.

OR Mean grade C- (minus) at KCSE) with a Certificate in a field related to tourism from a recognized Institution and two (2) years of relevant experience.

c) Diploma in Food & Beverage Sales & Service

Mode: Regular-Full Time & Blended.

Campus: Main and Mombasa.

Minimum Requirements

Food Production Service and Sales Certificate Level 5 or Hotel Catering and Accommodation or Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a mean grade of at least C- (minus) or Equivalent qualifications as determined by Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA).

d) Diploma in Culinary Arts

Mode: Regular-Full Time & Blended.

Offered at KU Main and Mombasa campuses.

Course Minimum Requirements

Food Production Service and Sales Certificate Level 5 or Hotel Catering and Accommodation or Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a mean grade of at least C- (minus) or Equivalent qualifications as determined by Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA).

Fees: Statutory Fees Ksh. 32,900.

e) Diploma in Housekeeping Management

The mode of study is Regular-Full Time and is available at the Main campus only.

Minimum Requirements

Hotel Catering and Accommodation Certificate Level 5, Or Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) C- (Minus) with a mean grade of at least C- Or equivalent qualifications as determined by KNQA.

f) Diploma in Tourism and Travel Management

Available at Mombasa campus on Regular-Full Time basis.

Minimum Requirements

Tour or Travel master craft certificate Level 5 Or KCSE C- (Minus) with a mean grade of at least C- Or equivalent qualifications as determined by KNQA.

g) Diploma in Events Management

Available at the Mombasa campus on a Regular-Full Time basis.

Minimum Requirements

Tour or Travel or Events certificate OR. KCSE C- (Minus) with a mean grade of at least C- OR. Equivalent qualifications as determined by KNQA.

h) Diploma in Sports Administration and Management

Mode of study: Regular-Full Time, Virtual and Open Learning.

Campuses available: Main – Full time, Mombasa, Nyeri, Nakuru – Virtual and Open Learning, Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Garissa, Kisumu, and Embu.

4. School of Education Diploma Courses

a) Diploma in Information Science

Mode of study: Regular-Full Time/ODEL, CEP. Available at the Main campus.

Minimum Course Requirements

Mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE. OR  holders of KNEC certificate in Library and Information Studies or equivalent with an overall pass of Credit or Distinction, or pass with 2 years or more years relevant practical experience.

Course Duration is 2 years.

Fees: Tuition fee for Regular East Africans Ksh 72,000, Non East Africans Ksh. 125,000, Statutory Fees 26,000.

b) Diploma in Records Management & Information Technology

The mode of study is Regular-Full Time/ODEL/CEP. Available at Main campus, DSVOL – Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Garissa, Kisumu, and Embu.

Minimum Course Requirements

Mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE. OR be holders of KNEC certificate in Library and Information Science or equivalent with an overall pass of Credit or distinction OR Pass with 2 years or more years relevant practical experience.

Course Duration is 2 years.

c) Diploma in Clinical and Child Neuropsychology

Available at the Main campus on Regular-Full Time mode.

Minimum Requirements

Mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or Division III at KCE or at least one (1) Principal and one (1) Subsidiary in KACE OR Mean grade of C- (Minus) at KCSE or equivalent with P1 Certificate or Early Childhood or Special Needs Education Certificate and at least two (2) years experience.

d) Diploma in Guidance and Counselling

Mode of study: VOL, Regular-Full Time.

Available at Main, Nakuru, Kisumu, Embu, Mombasa, and Garissa campuses.

Course Requirements

Minimum requirements Mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or Division III at KCE OR Mean grade of C- (Minus) at KCSE or equivalent with a Certificate in relevant area from a recognized institution.

Course Duration: 2 years

Fees: East Africans KSh. 72,000 p.a Non-East Africans KSh. 125,000 p.a Statutory Fees KShs. 26,000 p.a.

e) Diploma in Public Relations

Available at the Main, Mombasa, Nyeri, Nakuru, City, and Embu campuses on DSVOL mode of study.

Course Eligibility

The Kenyatta University and the School of Education admission regulations apply.

Specifically, the candidate will have KCSE Mean grade C (Plain) or its equivalent, with at least two years’ work experience.

Fees: East Africans Kshs. 130,000, Non-East Africans Kshs. 175,000, Statutory Fees Kshs. 23,500.

f) Diploma in Educational Leadership and Management

Available Full-Time DSVOL Continuous Education Program (CEP) at the Main campus all DSVOL Centres.

Minimum Course Requirements

Mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or Division III at KCE or P1 or S1 or its equivalent with at least two years work experience.

5. School of Business Diploma courses

a) Diploma in Human Resource Management

Mode of Study: Regular-Full Time, DSVOL.

Campuses: Main, Mombasa, Nyeri ,Nakuru, Embu Dsvol -Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Garissa, Kisumu,  and Embu.

Minimum Requirements

Mean Grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or Division III at KCE or one Principal and one Subsidiary at KACE OR Mean grade of C-(Minus) at KCSE with a certificate in the relevant area from a recognized institution.

7. School of Humanities and Social Sciences

a) Diploma in Chinese language and culture

Available Full time at the Main and City campuses.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must have a minimum grade of C (Plain) at KCSE examinations or its equivalent with at least C- in English or Kiswahili or KACE with at least a Subsidiary pass.

Or mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE with a certificate in Chinese language and culture awarded at Kenyatta university or level II Chinese language proficiency test awarded by Kenyatta University or any other recognized institution.

In addition to the above requirements, applicants should have either a Credit pass in certificate in Chinese language and culture.

Or a Credit pass in Chinese Language Proficiency test, (HSK) level II or youth Chinese Test (YCT) level III.

b) Diploma in Disaster Management

8. Creative and Performing Arts, Film and Media Studies Courses

a) Diploma in Fine Art

Regular-Full Time mode at the main campus.

Course Requirements

A KCSE mean grade of C (Plain) with any of the following: A Certificate in Art and Design from a recognized institution. OR, A portfolio of artworks to be presented before a Department selection panel for interview and selection.

b) Diploma in Communication and Media

Regular-Full Time at Ruiru campus.

Minimum Requirements

Mean grade C (Plain) KCSE or its equivalent, with at least C plain in English/Kiswahili and at least C- (Minus) or its equivalent in any of the following subjects; Geography, History and Government.

OR Mean grade of C- (Minus) KCSE OR equivalent with a certificate of at least Credit Pass in a relevant field of study from a recognized Institution.

c) Diploma in Film and Theatre Arts

Offered on Regular-Full Time mode at the Ruiru campus.

Course Requirements

Mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or equivalent with proven participation in Theatre Arts or Film or Mass Communication or Certificate in Theatre Arts or Film or Mass Communication or P1 certificate with a minimum of Division III and proven participation in Creative Arts.

Fees: East Africans Kshs. 82,000, Non-East Africans Kshs.102,500, Statutory Fees Kshs. 26,000.

d) Diploma in Digital Animation

Offered on Regular-Full Time mode at the Ruiru campus.

Minimum Course Requirements

A KCSE Mean Grade of C or equivalent. Prospective students with portfolio of their original work will have an added advantage.

9. School of Engineering Diploma Courses

Diploma in Information Technology

Offered as Regular, DSVOL mode at DSVOL – City, Mombasa, Nakuru, Garissa, Kisumu, Embu. Regular (Main Campus).

Minimum Requirements

Mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or equivalent with at least C (Plain) in Mathematics and English.

OR Mean grade of C- (Minus) at KCSE and at least C- (Minus) in Mathematics and English with Certificate in related field from a recognized institution.

10. School of Security Diplomacy and Peace Studies

DSVOL, Full-Time mode at the campuses: Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Garissa, Kisumu, Embu, nd Main campus.

Minimum Course Requirements

Mean grade of C (Plain) at KCSE or Division III or equivalent OR Mean grade of C – (Minus) at KCSE or equivalent with a Certificate in police studies from a recognized institution.
