Since its establishment in 1961, the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) has grown into one of the most respected public institutions of its kind in Africa admitting students not only from Kenya but also from several African countries. KIMC is now equipped with modern facilities for training courses in the fields of electronic and telecommunication engineering, film production, radio and television production, print and broadcast journalism, electronics and studio technology.
KIMC offers certificate, diploma, degree, and postgraduate diploma courses in several key fields. Diploma programmes take 3 years while Certificate programmes take 1 year.
Upgrade Programmes take 1 year or 2 years depending on the programme.
Postgraduate diploma programmes take 1 year or 2 & ½ years depending on the mode of study (full-time or part-time).

Minimum Requirements for Courses at KIMC

Film and Video Production
Diploma courses require KCSE mean grade C plain, C plain in English and C- Kiswahili and D+ (plus) in Mathematics or Physics.
Certificate courses require a mean grade of C- (minus) in KCSE, C- (Minus) in English and Kiswahili and in any other 2 subjects.
Computer Studies is a mandatory subject for the Animation and Graphic Design course.
Information Training
Diplomas in this category require KCSE Mean Grade of C plain, C plain in English and Kiswahili, and any other 2 subjects.
For the certificate programmes, you need KCSE Mean Grade C- (Minus), C- in English and Kiswahili, and any other 2 subjects.
Diploma in Broadcast Journalism Upgrade requirements include a Certificate in Broadcast Journalism, Radio and Television Presentation Techniques, Journalism or Mass Communication from KIMC or any other recognized college and one year of experience in media.
TV Radio Programme Production
Diploma programmes requirements include Mean Grade C plain, C plain in English and Kiswahili and any other 2 subjects. For Certificates, you require KCSE Mean Grade C-(Minus), C- (Minus) in English and Kiswahili, and any other 2 subjects.
For a Diploma in Radio and Television programme production (Upgrading), you need to have a Certificate in Radio or Television Production or Radio and Television Presentation Techniques from KIMC or any other recognized college and 1 year of experience in media.
Engineering Training
Diploma courses require KCSE mean grade C- (Minus), C- (Minus) in Mathematics, C plain in English, Physics/ Physical Sciences, or C- (Minus in Electricity or Drawing and Design as an additional subject)
Requirements for certificate courses include mean grade C- (Minus), C- (Minus) in English and Mathematics and Physics/ Physical Sciences
Advanced Diploma in Broadcast Engineering admission requirements are a Diploma in any of the following: Telecommunication, Electronics, Electrical, Media Technology with 3 years experience.
Certificate in Media Technology admission Requirements include a Mean Grade of C- (Minus), C- (Minus) in English and Kiswahili D in Mathematics and C-(Minus) in any other subjects.
Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication
Requires a Bachelors Degree from a recognized university.
