How to Pay for Netflix in Kenya Via M-Pesa GlobalPay

In Kenya, Netflix only receives payments through VISA or Debit cards. However, M-Pesa GlobalPay offers a workaround by generating a virtual Visa card linked to your M-Pesa account without needing a physical credit card or debit card.  You can use this virtual VISA card to pay for Netflix subscription via M-Pesa, and other international goods and services, normally as if you were using a physical VISA card.

This means you can pay for your Netflix without a physical credit card or debit card. The virtual card has a 16-digit card number, the expiry date (mm/yy) of the card and the security code (CVV).

Using the GlobalPay virtual Visa card is safe, and you have full control of how long the card should be active. You can even cancel it at any given time as you wish.

Before you pay for your Netflix subscription in Kenya using M-Pesa, you need to activate M-Pesa GlobalPay on your line and generate a virtual VISA card.

I will show you how to activate M-Pesa GlobalPay and pay for your Netflix subscription without using a credit card or debit card.

How to Activate M-Pesa GlobalPay Virtual Visa Card

You can activate MPesa GlobalPay either through the USSD short code *334# or through the new M-Pesa App.

Activate GlobalPay Using USSD *334#

1. Dial *334#
2. Select Lipa na M-PESA (option 6)
3. Select GlobalPay (option 5)
4. Accept the terms and conditions
5. Enter your M-PESA PIN
6. You will receive a 16-digit card number and card expiry date (mm/yy) in a flash SMS

Activate GlobalPay Using M-Pesa App

1. Log in to the M-PESA App
2. Select the Pay tab or tap on the Grow Tab
3. Select M-PESA GlobalPay
4. Select the application tab to activate M-PESA GlobalPay
5. Select your desired card color
6. You will receive your card details; card number, Expiry & CVV

If you used the USSD method, follow these steps to generate your card’s CVV:

Generate CVV Using USSD Code

1. Dial *334#
2. Select Lipa na M-PESA
3. Select GlobalPay option
4. Select Generate CVV
5. Enter your M-PESA PIN
6. You will receive a 3-digit CVV number in a flash SMS

The CVV code is only valid for 30 min hence ensure you are at the last stage of paying for the Netflix plan before generating it.

Here’s how you can use your virtual VISA card to pay for Netflix packages in Kenya:

How to Pay Netflix Via M-Pesa in Kenya

1. Log in to your Netflix account and select a Netflix Plan
2. Click Next to be taken to the payment method page
3. Select the option Credit or Debit Card
4. Enter your first name and last name as registered on MPesa
5. Enter the virtual VISA card number (16 digits)
6. Enter the expiry month and year e.g (05/25) for May 2025
7. Enter the CVV generated (you can generate a new one as shown above if 30 minutes have passed)
8. Select the Agree checkbox and proceed to complete the transaction

M-Pesa GlobalPay Fees and Limitations

There’s a 3.5% markup on the prevailing forex rate for each transaction. However, you can consider alternative services for frequent payments to minimize costs.

Transactions have a maximum of Ksh 150,000 and a daily spending limit of Ksh 300,000.

How to Deactivate M-Pesa GlobalPay and Stop Netflix Deductions

You can stop Netflix from automatically deducting the subscription charges from your M-Pesa account by suspending your virtual VISA card or opting out of GobalPay.

However, since the virtual card is only active for 30 minutes, Safaricom will automatically deactivate it once the time elapses.

If you feel like you want to deactivate GlobalPay manually, here’s how to do it:

1. Dial *334#
2. Select Lipa na M-PESA
3. Select GlobalPay
4. Select Manage Card
5. Select either option 1, Suspend, or option 4, Opt Out
6. Select reason
7. Key in your MPesa PIN
8. You will receive a notification SMS from GlobalPay  confirming your cancellation of M-Pesa GlobalPay

You can also cancel your Netflix subscription by logging into your account and selecting Account, to open the Account Details page.

From there, click on the Cancel Membership button to open the cancelation confirmation page. Complete by finally clicking on the Finish Cancelation button.
