Uzima University courses

Uzima University is a private university in Kenya accredited by the Commission for University Education (CUE) to offer various degree and diploma courses in medical and biomedical sciences. The programs offered by the institution are fully approved by the Medical Practitioners & Dentist Council (MP&DC), Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) and Clinical Officers Council (COC).

Uzima University is located in the heart of Kisumu city, off Kisumu- Kakamega road and is known to offer purely medical courses.

This article explores the certificate, diploma and degree programs offered by the university and the minimum academic entry requirements for applications.

Some medical courses at Uzima University cost far less than the same courses offered in public universities in Kenya.

Uzima University Diploma Courses

Here are the diploma programs offered at the institution, intake and their minimum requirements:

1. Diploma in Clinical Medicine

The intake for the diploma in clinical medicine is in September and the program runs for 3 years full-time.

To qualify for this course, you need at least a KCSE Mean grade of C Plain and C plain in English/ Kiswahili, C plain in Biology, and C- in Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics.

2. Diploma in Community Health and Development

Requires at least KCSE mean grade of C- and C- in the following cluster subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, English or Kiswahili.

The intakes are in May and September on a regular full-time mode. The course takes 2 years.

3. Diploma in Health Records and Information Technology

You need to have attained at least a KCSE mean grade of C Plain and C in English/ Kiswahili, C in Biology and C- in any two of the following subjects: Chemistry, Mathematics & Physics.

Holders of Certificate in Health Records and Information Technology from a recognized Institution can also apply.

Intakes are in May and September and the program accepts both full-time (2 years) and part-time and weekends (3 years) modes of study.

4. Diploma in Mortuary Science and Practice

The minimum entry requirement is a C- in KCSE or Certificate in Mortuary Science (Upgrading). Duration of study is 3 Years full-time, 2 Years part-time.

Teaching methods are online and block practicals.

5. Child Counselling and Psychology

Requires a KCSE mean grade of C- or KCE Division III or equivalent or a certificate in Community Development, Social Development or Social Work.

Intakes are in May and September for regular (Full-time) mode. the course takes 2 years to complete.

Certificate Courses Available at Uzima University

The certificate courses at the institution are offered on a full-time mode and run for 2 years. The minimum entry requirement is a mean grade of C- in KCSE.

However, some courses may ask for additional minimum qualifications in some subjects.

Here are the certificate courses with additional requirements where applicable:

  1. Certificate in Health Records and Information Technology (D+ in Maths)
  2. Certificate in Counselling Psychology
  3. Certificate in Community Health and Development

Degree Courses Offered at Uzima University

1. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

You qualify for this degree course if you have any of the following qualifications:

  • A KCSE mean grade of B plain and B plain in Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics/ Physics, English/ Kiswahili.
  • Holder of Diploma in Medical related courses, a Mean grade of C+ in KCSE and an average of C+ in Cluster subjects.
  • Holder of bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences and a Minimum of C+ in Cluster subjects.

Intakes are in September every year and the course takes 6 years full-time.

2. Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Any of the following qualifications are required:

  • At least KCSE mean grade of C+ and C+ in the following cluster subjects: English or Kiswahili, Mathematics or Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, English or Kiswahili.
  • Diploma in Nursing holders with a minimum grade of C in KCSE or Division II in EACE or its equivalent. You must be registered by the Nursing Council of Kenya and hold a current practicing license.

Intakes are in September for regular full-time students and March for part-time (Weekend).

The nursing degree duration is 4 years or 2 1/2 years if upgrading.

3. Bachelor of Science in Clinical Medicine

Holders of any of the following requirements qualify to apply:

  • At least a KSCE mean grade of C+ and C+ in the following cluster subjects: English or Kiswahili, Mathematics or Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, English or Kiswahili.
  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine & Surgery from a recognized institution and must be registered by the Clinical Officers Council.

The intake is done in September and the program is offered on both full-time and part-time modes.

The Duration is 4 years, and 3 years if upgrading.

4. Bachelor of Science in Microbiology

Any of the following requirements are considered:

  • Mean grade C+, and C plain in Maths/Physics, Chemistry, English/Kiswahili, C+ Biology.
  • Holders of a Diploma in applied Biology from a recognized Institution.
  • Holders of a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences/ Technology or related field from a recognized Institution.
  • Holders of HND in Applied Biology or HND in Medical Laboratory.

5. Bachelor of Science in Health Systems Management

To qualify for this degree courses you should be:

  • A holder of a Diploma in a health related discipline recognized by the University Senate. OR
  • A holder of any other Diploma or equivalent qualifications recognized by the University Senate and 2 years’ working experience in the health sector. OR
  • A holder of KCSE with mean grade of C+ or above or its equivalent and have at least the following specific course grades: Mandatory Optional English/Kiswahili C+ Any one science subject C+ Mathematics C+ or any one humanities subject C+.

The course takes 4 Years of three (3) trimesters each and 1 year attachment.
