Thanks to MPesa’s partnership with MTN Uganda, MTN Rwanda, and Vodacom Tanzania telecommunication networks, it is now possible to send money to East African countries through MPesa Global Pay.
For this to work, you should be registered on MPesa and the person receiving the money should be a subscriber on MTN for Uganda and Rwanda customers, and Vodacom for Tanzania customers.
Moreover, you should enable MPesa Global Pay on your line before accessing it.

To register for this service, follow these simple steps:
- Dial *840# on your MPesa line
- Accept the terms and conditions
- Enter your physical address or nearest road
- Enter your MPesa PIN
- You have successfully opted into the Global Pay service
How to Send Money From MPesa to MTN Uganda
- Dial *840#
- Select Send Money Abroad
- Select Send to Mobile Number
- Select Uganda from the country list
- Enter the destination MTN mobile number in the international format e.g 256xxxxxxxxxx
- Enter the amount between KSh. 101 and Ksh. 250,000
- Select the source of funds e.g savings or business
- Select the purpose of funds
- Confirm the recipient’s name and amount to be received, in UGX
- Tap on Accept
- Enter your MPesa PIN to complete the transaction
- You will receive notifications from MPesa and MPesa IMT for a successful transaction
The money will be received in Ugandan shillings.
How to Send Money From MPesa to MTN Rwanda
- Dial *840#
- Select Send Money Abroad
- Select Send to Mobile Number
- Select Rwanda from the country list
- Enter the destination MTN mobile number in the international format like 250xxxxxxxxxx
- Enter the amount between KSh. 101 and Ksh. 250,000
- Select the source of funds e.g savings or business
- Select the purpose of funds
- Confirm the recipient’s name and amount to be received, in Tanzanian shillings
- Tap on Accept
- Enter your MPesa PIN to complete the process
- You will receive notifications from MPesa and MPesa IMT for a successful transaction
The money will be received in Rwandan Francs.
How to Transfer Money From MPesa to Vodacom Tanzania
- Dial *840#
- Select Send Money Abroad
- Select Send to Mobile Number
- From the country list, select Tanzania
- Enter the Vodacom mobile number of the receiver in the international format like 250xxxxxxxxxx
- Enter the amount between KSh. 101 and Ksh. 250,000
- Select the source of funds e.g salary, or business
- Select the purpose of funds
- Confirm and accept the recipient’s name and amount to be received, in Tanzanian shillings
- Enter your MPesa PIN to complete the transaction
- You will receive notifications from MPesa and MPesa IMT for a successful transaction
Alternatively, you can transfer money to Vodacom Tz through Lipa an Mpesa option as follows:
- Select Lipa na M-PESA from MPesa Menu
- Select paybill
- Enter the business number 255255
- Enter the recipient’s mobile number as the account number in the format 2557XXXXXXXX
- Enter the amount
- Enter your MPesa PIN
- Confirm and complete the transaction
There you have it. The above steps show how to send money to MTN Uganda, MTN Rwanda, and Vodacom Tanzania using the MPesa Global Pay international money transfer service.
Note that the recipient will receive the money in the destination country’s local currency.
