In the CBA that was signed in 2016 by the TSC and teachers’ unions, teachers received some enhanced basic salaries and allowances. Though enhancement in basic salary favoured mostly administrators, the then Salaries and Remuneration Commission also provided a considerable increase in house allowance for the teachers. This article explores some TSC allowances per job group enjoyed by teachers and how the house allowance differs depending on where you are teaching.
Allowances Paid by TSC to Teachers
All teachers in Kenya employed by the TSC enjoy three allowances, namely House allowance, Commuter allowance and Annual leave allowance.
TSC Annual Leave Allowance
Annual leave allowance is paid to all teachers once at the beginning of every year.
Teachers in job groups B5 and C1 receive a leave allowance of Ksh. 4,000, while those in C2 to C5 get 6,000. On the other hand, teachers in D1 to D5, mostly administrators, get paid Ksh. 10,000.

Teachers House Allowance by Job Group and Region
Here are the enhanced house allowances for teachers in different regions of Kenya:
Teachers within Nairobi receive higher house allowances due to increased house rents in the city. However, note that major municipalities strictly refer to those areas within major towns.
Other former municipalities and other areas in Kenya are paid according to the following table:
Most areas in Kenya, especially rural areas fall under other areas when it comes to TSC house allowances. However, other TSC allowances per job group, like commuter allowance and leave allowance do not depend on the region one is teaching.
